Who Am I?
Hi!
I’m Maya Wrobel!
I am an Industrial Designer with a focus in Furniture Design and Lighting!
I am and Industrial Designer with a Bachelor’s Degree of Science in Industrial Design from Thomas Jefferson University: East Falls Campus formerly Philadelphia University. During my time at university I gained many insights in the design industry through company sponsored projects and visiting many design offices including Stylex and Emeco. I’ve also been credited as designing and working until the very end of the project. I’ve never given up on trying to make the design as best that I can.
As a student at the university, my responsibilities were to work hard and get good grades. As I attended classes and lectures, I also was elected Industrial Design Student Association President my Sophomore year and held the position for two years. As club leader, I organized meetings, set up events, and helped with creating a good studio atmosphere around the four grade levels.
I held a job position as well at the Rutabega Toy Library which is a subscription based program where parents could bring their children to rent toys, rent reusable party supplies, and use the space as a play area and early socialization. I had the job of Toy Tinkerer in which I repaired and cleaned broken toys in the library’s catalog making sure the toy could be used for years to come. I gained a lot of experience in seeing the way the toys were manufactured and how the kids would use and interact with them.
My main focus of classes at Jefferson were lighting and furniture.
I have taken three furniture classes, designed a podium for my thesis, and designed a chair during my Sophomore studio. I have always enjoyed designing furniture since I was a child and began pursuing it seriously during university. I gained many insights into the furniture industry through these classes. I was able to visit many furniture factories to see how they were made and produced which influenced the way I design my furniture today!
My lighting expertise come from two different classes. During the second half of my Sophomore studio I designed and 3D-printed a lamp and then in my Junior year I worked in a team with my fellow design students and designer Lyn Godley to make a lighting show. During these classes I gained a tremendous amount of insight into the industry, especially the way the color and hue of light affects someone’s mood.
I gained a substantial amount of experience at Jefferson, but I also job experience too.
In the summer of my Sophomore year, I had the position of Camp Counselor at the YMCA. The job entailed leading and helping campers ages 6-9 with activities around the camp. I gained valuable experience in leadership and organization. For example, there would be many moments where I would need to lead a group activity or help two children make up if they were fighting.
In the summer of my Junior year, I had the position of Creative Intern at Unique Industries. As a Creative Intern, my job was to make product mockups for company showrooms so the organizers could see how the product would look on the shelves before being set up. Some of these companies include, Five Below, Dollar General, and Walmart. I gained much experience with working on product mockups from plates, napkins, table clothes, garlands, and many more. While working there, my boss attributed me as a fast learner. Any time there was a new skill or material, I would learn it quickly with ease.
All of these experiences combined allowed me to work to my fullest ability in group projects and activities.
