Flow
A 3D-printed luminaire.
Ideation
For the 3D-printed luminaire, I started with many ideation sketches for the form of the shade and the base.
I decided to further explore the sketches circled in solidworks by making models.
Further Development
I made many iterations of the lamp shade before narrowing it down to the bottom three models and deciding on the one on the right because the way the plans curve on the form.
Once I had the final version of the lamp shade, I printed three different versions at 1:1 scale with clear and white filament. The middle version uses clear filament but doubles the wall thickness of the other models.
From these versions, I went forward with the white filament version since it made curvature and form of the shade more pronounced.
Modelmaking
Lamp Base Exploration
Once the shade was done, I further explored the base for the luminaire with many different iterations.
Since the shade of the lamp resembled a flow, I decided to try and replicate a stem or organic shape to have the two objects flow together.
The circled model is the one I went forward with since it flowed with the shape but simplistic so the shade can shine in comparison.
Final Model
The final version of Flow consists of a fully 3D-printed luminaire with an LED light in the shade.
The shade itself was 3D-printed by Dive Design who are experienced designers using 3D-printing to make products for pets.
With their custom 10mm hot end, we were able to get a sturdy and magnificent looking shape.
