Luso
A chair for any setting.
Luso is a project in which I partnered with Stylex, a contract furniture company, to design and prototype a new piece of furniture.
The main goals of this project was to design a chair that, fit seamlessly in any environment and follows Stylex’s design aesthetic.
Research
Before sketching or designing, I did research into the current market and Stylex’s products.
Below are Stylex’s current products including the Carry on and Ambi which can be any space including offices and waiting rooms.
I looked at the market outside of Stylex to see what other companies were designing. Above are two pieces of furniture from some of Stylex’s competitors. I noticed a very similar style chair in my research.
Initial Ideation
I started with the idea of giving someone their own space when sitting in a public area. From my ideation, I decided to move forward with design circled on the right and removed the arm rests because it would be difficult to prototype with a semester long time constraint.
Modelmaking
After deciding on the design, I began to make models to find the right sizing for each aspect of the chair.
I made five models in total before making the final prototype.
The models grew from 1/10 scale to 1/5 scale, all the way to a full scale model out of cardboard. Then, a second one from wood as a ergonomic rig.
Prototyping
Once I had all of the measurements for the final version of Luso, I began assembling it together through molding, cutting, stapling, pattern making, and sewing. I did each of these steps in order to bring the product to the real world. The chair itself is made using a wooden interior with foam on the outer and sewn cover made from black jean fabric.
Final Product
Luso is chair for any space or home. The back is molded for back support. The comfortable seating can be for any task from reading to doing work on a laptop.
The chair is 32 inches tall with a seat pan of 25 inches.
It has 1 inch locking casters on the bottom to prevent the chair from rolling away when someone is sitting on it.
Luso comes in different colorways for any setting.
